What about food production and our climate crisis? Regenerative Farming methods can hold the answer:
Regenerative farming systems are ones which rely on natural, connected processes to enrich the soil. Whether ‘Green manure’ – using herbs & grasses to keep soil covered & feed nutrients back into the soil or grazing animals to fertilise it naturally, planting crops to protect each other or to encourage natural predators (against crop disease) or the so called ‘no till’ – avoiding disrupting the structure of the soil, these systems all restore and rely on each other. All this means fewer or no added chemicals and results in better water retention, more carbon capture, the highest animal welfare, nature restoration and even some surprising changes to our food!
The Vet in me needs to share just one of the many overlooked miracles of cows – those long tongues wrap around blades of grass, tug at the ground & trigger the grass to feed its soil microbes by releasing sugars through its roots. The result? More fertile soil which captures the greenhouse gases produced far more effectively. This is why these farming systems are also termed ‘Climate-friendly’ . Hence the term ‘Less but Better’ meat.
